Lajjun Project

Development of the oil shale deposit at Lajjun has been promoted on the basis of a number of perceived site-specific advantages, including:

  • Favourable conditions for surface mining including low stripping ratio (on average of the order of 1.1:1)
  • Minimal overburden
  • Absence of significant structural disturbances and general absence of intrusive rock bodies
  • Properties of oil shale: relatively high oil content and calorific value, low moisture content, favourable properties for processing
  • Sufficient reserves to justify a commercial processing plant
  • Grid power supply available
  • Located in a sparsely populated area, with good roads connected to asphalted highways; and
  • The availability of adequate amounts of brackish groundwater for processing, quenching and dust control.
